Manu Bhaker breaks silence on Khel Ratna controversy, says performance comes first
Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian shooter Manu Bhaker has spoken out regarding the controversy surrounding her exclusion from the nominees for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The Paris Olympics medallist clarified her stance, emphasizing that while awards serve as motivation, they are not her primary focus.
"As an athlete, my role is to play and perform for my country," Bhaker stated. She acknowledged that recognition inspires her but does not define her journey. Addressing the situation, Bhaker hinted at a possible lapse in the nomination process and assured that steps are being taken to resolve the matter.
The Sports Ministry reportedly claimed Bhaker did not apply for the award. However, her father, Ram Kishan, refuted this, asserting that the application was submitted but no response was received.

Despite the ongoing controversy, Bhaker remains committed to her goals. "Irrespective of the award, I shall remain motivated to win more medals for my country," she added, urging people not to speculate about the issue.
A 12-member selection committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Justice V Ramasubramanian, excluded Bhaker from the list of nominees. Among those shortlisted were Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and para-athlete Praveen Kumar.
Speaking to India Today, Bhaker’s father voiced his disappointment, saying, "What's the point of getting two medals in a single Olympics if you have to beg for awards?"

He further criticized the decision-making process, adding, "One government official is deciding, and committee members are silent, not giving their opinion. I don't understand. Is this the way you are encouraging athletes?"
A Sports Ministry source revealed that the final list is yet to be finalized. "A meeting with the sports minister is likely to be held on Wednesday with the committee," the source added.
Despite the setback, Bhaker remains focused on her performance, determined to bring more laurels to the nation.
