Xtra Time Web Desk:  Rachael Gunn, an Australian breakdancer known as Bgirl Raygun, made waves at the Paris 2024 Olympics, captivating audiences with her unique performance despite not securing a medal. The 36-year-old college professor from Macquarie University in Sydney, who has a PhD in cultural studies and a background in ballroom dancing, stood out in the breakdance event with a performance that was both memorable and controversial.

Dressed in the standard Australian Olympian uniform, Gunn brought her distinctive style to the stage, incorporating kangaroo hops and ground-swimming moves that diverged from the traditional breakdancing techniques. Gunn was defeated in her three round-robin battles, each ending with a score of 18-0. Despite the losses, she defended her unique approach, explaining that her style emphasizes dynamics, quick footwork, power moves, and freezes, which she feels may not be fully appreciated in the context of these events.

The response from the public was divided. Some viewers took to social media to criticize her performance, questioning the choice of representative for Australia and mocking her unconventional dance style and attire. One social media user noted, "There are 27.7 million people in Australia and look who they have sent to the Olympics for this inaugural event!"

However, not all reactions were negative. Australian Olympic legend Anna Meares publicly defended Gunn, expressing disappointment at the online ridicule. Meares, who is the chef de mission for the Australian team in Paris, praised Gunn’s bravery and unique character, emphasizing the need to support athletes who push the boundaries of traditional sports.
