On July 1, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced that two candidates have been shortlisted for the role of India’s new cricket coach. This decision follows the conclusion of Rahul Dravid's tenure, marked by India's triumphant T20 World Cup campaign. The BCCI began accepting applications for the position on June 13.

Gautam Gambhir has emerged as a favorite to succeed Dravid, following his successful stint as a mentor for KKR in the IPL 2024. Gambhir has openly expressed his interest in the role and reportedly interviewed for the position on June 18. Shah confirmed that the new coach will be appointed before the Sri Lanka tour and that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) had interviewed and shortlisted two names for the job. Currently with the team in Barbados, Shah mentioned that the final decision would be made upon reaching Mumbai.

“Both coach and selector appointments will be made shortly. The CAC has shortlisted two names, and we will proceed with their decision after reaching Mumbai. VVS Laxman is heading to Zimbabwe, but the new coach will join from the Sri Lanka series,” Shah told the media.

Reports indicate that the shortlisted candidates include Gambhir, WV Raman, and an overseas candidate. Shah also hinted at the continued presence of senior players in upcoming tournaments, emphasizing the aim to win the World Test Championship and the Champions Trophy in 2025 with a similar squad.
