Xtra Time Web Desk: In a historic moment for Indian cricket, 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Bihar was signed by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.10 crore at the IPL mega auction in Jeddah. The eighth-grade student from Samastipur became the youngest cricketer ever to secure an IPL contract, a feat that has captivated the cricketing world. Vaibhav’s raw talent impressed Royals’ head coach Rahul Dravid during trials. “He’s got some really good skills, and we felt this could be a great environment for him to grow,” Dravid said.

At 12, he debuted for Bihar in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, scoring 400 runs in five matches. This year, Vaibhav became the youngest Indian to debut in the Ranji Trophy at just 12 years and 284 days. In September, he smashed a 62-ball century against Australia U-19 in Chennai, further cementing his reputation. His impressive performances in youth tournaments, including the India A and B U-19 squads, caught the attention of IPL scouts. Rajasthan Royals were particularly impressed during trials, where he smashed three sixes under pressure.

The auction saw intense bidding, with Delhi Capitals starting at ₹30 lakh. Rajasthan Royals entered the fray at ₹35 lakh, eventually clinching the deal. Despite the fame and fortune, Sanjiv remains focused on keeping his son grounded. “He just wants to play cricket. A few years ago, it was Doraemon; now, it’s all about the game,” he said proudly. “He’s not just my son now; he’s the pride of Bihar,” added emotional Sanjiv, as Vaibhav represents India in the U-19 Asia Cup in Dubai.

His father also addressed age controversy, asserting his son’s legitimacy. “He first passed a BCCI bone test at 8.5 years and has already played for India U-19. We fear no one; he can undergo another age test,” he said, confidently dismissing claims that Vaibhav is older than 13.
Vaibhav’s story is one of resilience, proving that even from humble beginnings, dreams can soar, breaking barriers of age and circumstance.
