Xtra Time Web Desk: Virat Kohli asserted his dominance on Day 3 of the 1st Test against New Zealand at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, October 18. He scored his 31st Test half-century and reached the significant milestone of 9,000 Test runs, becoming only the fourth Indian batter to achieve this feat, alongside legends Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar. Kohli accomplished this milestone during India’s second innings, completing 53 runs in the 42nd over. Notably, he took 197 innings to reach this landmark, making him the slowest among the quartet. This half-century marked his first 50-plus score in Tests this year, alleviating concerns about his form at a crucial juncture for the team.

The crowd at Chinnaswamy Stadium witnessed a classic Kohli performance. Coming in at No. 3 after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal, he initially struggled against left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, taking 14 deliveries to score his first run. However, once he found his rhythm, Kohli partnered effectively with Sarfaraz Khan to stabilize India's innings. While Sarfaraz adopted an aggressive approach, Kohli showcased his trademark elegance with crisp drives and elegant shots down the ground. The fans roared with delight as they savored a masterclass from their favorite player.

As conditions improved, Sarfaraz Khan and Virat Kohli capitalized on the opportunity after both scored ducks in the first innings. They displayed great intent, maintaining a solid partnership while scoring at a brisk pace. Kohli, batting at No. 3 for India in Tests after eight years, struggled in his initial innings, appearing tentative as the ball swung in the air.

Will O'Rourke bowled a stunning delivery, perfectly supported by the field placement. The ball swung sharply into Kohli's chest, resulting in a faint glove touch. Glenn Philips completed a fine catch, dismissing Kohli without scoring.

Historically, Kohli hasn’t excelled in this position; prior to the New Zealand Test, he had played six matches at No. 3, accumulating just 97 runs at an average of 16.16.
