IND vs ENG: Mohammad Shami sidelined again! Is recovery still a concern?
Xtra Time Web Desk: Mohammed Shami’s much-anticipated return to international cricket was postponed as he was left out of India's playing XI for the first T20I against England. The omission has raised questions about his fitness despite his apparent readiness, with the 34-year-old pacer bowling for nearly half an hour in the side nets before the match.
Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, who won the toss and opted to bowl, unveiled a lineup that did not feature Shami, fueling speculation about the selectors’ confidence in the pacer’s physical condition. Notably, Shami has been training rigorously, including bowling at full intensity during India’s practice sessions. However, his heavily strapped left knee remains a concern, with recurring swelling reported after strenuous sessions.

Skipper’s Confidence vs. Fitness Concerns
Despite Shami's exclusion, Suryakumar had previously expressed confidence in the veteran pacer's comeback. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, he said, “It’s always good to have an experienced bowler in your side. He’s making a comeback after over a year, and I’m really excited to see him. His hard work at the NCA and his focus on recovery have been commendable.”
Shami himself echoed this optimism, emphasizing his determination to represent India again. At a recent Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) event, he said, “The hunger to play for the country should never end. No matter how many injuries you face, you fight back.”
Fitness Concerns Linger
Shami has been out of action since the T20 World Cup final loss to Australia in November 2023, where he suffered an ankle injury requiring surgery. His recovery was further delayed by knee swelling, which hampered his domestic cricket return. However, he has since showcased his form and fitness in domestic tournaments, claiming 11 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and five in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
During India’s recent practice sessions, Shami bowled with full intensity and precision, focusing on a two-stump line under the watchful eyes of bowling coach Morne Morkel. While he appeared to have no immediate discomfort, his cautious movements and strapped knee hinted at lingering issues.
Champions Trophy Implications
Shami’s potential inclusion in the Champions Trophy squad has gained importance with concerns over Jasprit Bumrah’s back niggle. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar emphasized Shami’s value, stating, “If Shami is fit and playing regularly, his quality and experience are invaluable. Reintroducing him to T20Is is a way to prepare him for high-pressure international cricket.”
