Xtra Time Web Desk: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has praised Rishabh Pant as a future great in Test cricket while highlighting areas for improvement in his white-ball performance. Pant, who is set to make his Test return against Bangladesh in Chennai on September 19, has been recovering from a serious car accident in December 2022. Ganguly believes that Pant's potential in Tests is immense, though he also needs to enhance his performance in T20s and ODIs.

"I consider Rishabh Pant one of India's best Test batsmen," Ganguly said at a promotional event. "His return to the side is no surprise, and I expect him to continue performing in Tests. If he maintains his current form, he will become an all-time great in Test cricket. However, he needs to improve his game in shorter formats. With his talent, I am confident that he will excel in time."

Pant's explosive batting has often turned matches in India's favor, particularly overseas. Ganguly's endorsement underscores the high expectations placed on Pant to become a key player for India in Test matches.

The Indian squad for the Bangladesh series will be without Mohammed Shami, who is recovering from ankle surgery. Uncapped pacers Yash Dayal and Akash Deep have been included, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will spearhead the pace attack.

"I know Mohammed Shami's absence is due to injury, but he will return soon as India prepares for the tour to Australia," Ganguly noted. "Despite his absence, the attack remains strong. The conditions in Chennai will favor spin, but the pace attack will still be formidable with Bumrah, Siraj, and eventually Shami."

Looking ahead, Ganguly emphasized the significance of India's upcoming tours to Australia and England. "The tours to Australia and England will be crucial tests for the squad. With the pace attack featuring Bumrah, Siraj, and Shami, India will be well-equipped."

Ganguly also highlighted Bengal pacer Akash Deep as a promising talent. "Akash Deep is an impressive young fast bowler. He bowls quickly and consistently for long spells. His performances for Bengal have been notable, and he has the potential to be as fast as Siraj and Shami. He is definitely one to watch," Ganguly concluded.
