Xtra Time Web Desk: Zaheer Khan has praised young pacer Akash Deep, highlighting Mohammed Shami as the ideal role model for him after the bowler's impressive start to international cricket. Akash has stepped in as India's third pacer in Shami's absence due to injury and has shown similarities to the veteran pacer in his approach.

Zaheer noted that Akash, like Shami, focuses on a stump-to-stump line and uses the seam effectively. "He [Akash Deep] also looks to keep things straight and attack the stumps. Mohammed Shami has a similar approach. Shami can be a good role model for Akash Deep," Zaheer said in an interview with Cricbuzz.

Zaheer would say Shami is the perfect role model for Akash and the young pacer has consistency. The Indian legend said that if Akash does chat with other bowlers, then he can add variety to his bowling a lot sooner.

"When you attack the stumps and bowl good lengths, that will definitely help your cause. This is the way Shami has achieved his success. If Akash Deep is looking for a role model, there can be no one better than him. His seam position is always talked about. Akash Deep has consistency, but if he chats with other bowlers, he can add variety in his bowling a lot sooner," said Zaheer.

Akash continued his fine run with 2 more wickets to his name in the form of Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam. The 27-year-old is in contention to be in the Indian squad for the Australia tour for the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Shami is stepping up his recovery to be in line for the BGT down under and could make a return during the New Zealand series.
