IPL 2024: Shreyas Iyer doubtful for first few matches for KKR
Xtra Time Web Desk: Shreyas Iyer's participation in the ongoing Ranji Trophy final between Mumbai and Vidarbha took a hit as he didn't take the field on Day 4 due to reported back spasms, raising doubts about his involvement in upcoming IPL 2024 season. This setback comes after Iyer had complained of similar back issues during the second Test between India and England in Vizag, resulting in his exclusion from the squad for the remaining matches of the series. Despite his return for Mumbai's semi-final clash with Tamil Nadu and the subsequent final against Vidarbha, where he scored an impressive 95 off 111 in the second innings on Day 3, his performance was marred by recurring back spasms requiring treatment from the team physio.
According to sources cited in a report by the Times of India, Iyer's back injury, which had led to surgery last year, seems to have flared up again, putting his IPL 2024 participation in jeopardy. There are concerns that he may miss the initial matches for Kolkata Knight Riders, the franchise he leads in the IPL. The report suggests that Iyer had informed the Indian team management about his recurring injury during the recent Test series against England.

Iyer missed the entire last season due to back surgery. His competitive comeback began with the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, followed by a significant role in India's journey to the ODI World Cup final in October-November. Despite his contributions, both Iyer and Ishan Kishan were overlooked for the annual BCCI contract last month, with the board citing that they were not considered for this round of recommendations.
The uncertainty surrounding Iyer's fitness is a concern for both Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy final and Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming IPL season. His potential absence could significantly impact both teams' strategies and performance, emphasizing the importance of managing player injuries effectively in professional cricket.
