IPL 2024: Rohit Sharma's IPL drought: A tale of middle over misery
Xtra Time Web Desk: Over the past five IPL seasons, Rohit Sharma, has struggled to match his reputation as a prolific batsman. Despite his prowess as a six-hitter, Rohit's run accumulation in the IPL has been lackluster, with no 500-run season since 2013 and an average below 30 since 2016. His strike rate has also declined, with the last season above 133 recorded nine years ago.
However, Rohit's underwhelming IPL performances do not overshadow his excellence in international cricket. Over the past decade, he has been the leading T20I opener in terms of runs scored and sixes hit, with a record-breaking five centuries to his name. In the current IPL season, Rohit has shown glimpses of his T20I form, particularly in the Powerplay overs, where he boasts an exceptional strike rate of 178.21. However, his performance in the middle overs has been scrutinized, as seen in a recent match against Chennai Super Kings where he slowed down considerably, scoring only 36 runs from 26 balls.

This trend of slowing down in the middle overs contrasts sharply with his aggressive approach in T20Is, where he maintains a strike rate of 148.60 during the same phase. His T20I success is undeniable. Although his IPL performance raises questions about his effectiveness in the crucial middle overs, yet he is one of the most succesful captains of IPL history with 5 trophies.
