Xtra Time Web Desk: India’s rising all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy etched his name in the record books with a scintillating maiden Test century on Day 3 of the fourth Test against Australia in Melbourne. The 21-year-old smashed a brilliant 114 off 189 balls, including 11 fours and a six, as he played a pivotal role in helping India claw back from a massive first-innings deficit.

Reddy, speaking at the post-day press conference, shared his emotional reaction to receiving appreciation from none other than his idol, Virat Kohli. Recalling the moment, Reddy said, “It was such a grateful moment for me. I’ve been watching Virat bhai since my childhood and made him my idol. Growing up, I always dreamt of playing alongside him. Kohli, who also scored a century in the same innings while Reddy was at the non-striker’s end, praised the youngster for his composed innings. “He came to me and said, ‘You really played well; you got the team back in the game.’ Hearing that from him made me so happy,” Reddy added, his joy palpable.

The match also had a dramatic highlight when Mohammed Siraj walked in as the last batter with Reddy stranded on 99. Known more for his bowling than his batting, Siraj defended three tense deliveries from Pat Cummins, drawing thunderous cheers from the crowd. Reddy then completed his century in style with a lofted straight drive against Scott Boland, celebrating jubilantly with Siraj at the crease.

“The crowd went crazy after Siraj’s last-ball defense,” Reddy laughed. “Even during my century, it wasn’t as loud! I really have to thank him for helping me get to my 100. His calm approach made all the difference.”

Earlier in the innings, Indian fans were on edge as Washington Sundar (50) and Jasprit Bumrah departed in quick succession. Reddy’s composed partnership with Siraj in those final moments underscored his maturity and ability to handle pressure.
