Xtra Time Web Desk: Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has backed KL Rahul who's been undergoing terrible form recently. Keeping high hopes on Rahul, Gambhir highlighted how versatile he has been for India and also revealed about Rahul being an option for India in opening slot.

Despite back to back failures, Gambhir believes in Rahul's capability to fill in as opener in absence of Captain Rohit Sharma. While addressing the press; Gambhir stated, “I think, and that is the quality of a man that he can actually bat at the top of the order. He can bat at number three, and he can actually bat at number six as well. So you need quite a lot of talent to be doing these kind of jobs as well. And he's kept wickets in one day format as well. So imagine how many countries have players like KL who can actually open the batting and can bat at number six as well. So I feel that, if needed be, I think he can do the job for us, especially if it is not available for the first test match."

Rahul’s form has become a cause of concern for the Indian Test team as he was recently dropped for the last two Tests vs New Zealand with Sarfaraz Khan replacing him. Since 2022, he has scored 514 runs in Tests from 12 matches (21 innings) at an average of 25.7 having registered three half centuries and a century. Despite his below-par outings, the 32-year-old has got the support of the team management and it remains to be seen whether he will be asked to open in the first Test scheduled to begin from November 22 in Perth.
