A memorable gesture from Australia

Ashwin’s farewell was made even more special by a touching gesture from the Australian cricket team. Captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, his long-time rival-turned-friend, presented Ashwin with a signed team shirt in a moment that reflected mutual respect between the two sides.

Recalling his debut tour of Australia in 2011-12, Ashwin reminisced about witnessing the transition of Indian cricket legends. "It feels like just now I toured Australia for the first time. I saw everybody transition. Rahul paaji left, Sachin paaji left. But trust me, guys, everybody's time comes, and it's truly my time," Ashwin said.

He further added, "Over the past four years, I have realised how much I value the relationships I've built with my teammates. I have had a great time."

"The cricket nut in me will never retire"

Ashwin emphasized that his passion for cricket would remain undiminished. As he prepared to head home on December 19, he assured his teammates that he would continue to follow their performances closely.

"The international cricketer in me might have come to an end, but the cricket nut in me will never come to an end. If at all you guys need anything, I am just a phone call away," he said.

A glittering career

Ashwin concluded his illustrious career with 537 Test wickets, the second-most by an Indian bowler, and six centuries to his name. In 2016, he achieved the rare distinction of being named ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year, becoming only the third Indian to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy.

Known for his dominance in the longest format, Ashwin held the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test bowling rankings multiple times. His tactical brilliance and contributions with both bat and ball ensured his place as one of cricket’s all-time greats.

As Indian cricket bids farewell to a legend, Ashwin’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations to come.
