Xtra Time Web Desk: Bengal finally has something to be proud of in the arena of sports, as its para athletes delivered remarkable performances at the 24th National Para Swimming Championship held in Goa from October 19 to October 22, 2024. Bengal’s team of 27 athletes, comprising 16 boys and 11 girls, brought home an impressive tally of 52 medals – 27 gold, 20 silver, and 5 bronze – securing Bengal the 5th position on the national leaderboard behind Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu.

The Association expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Paralympic Committee of India and Para Swimming of India for their exceptional management of the event, which saw over 500 athletes from across the nation. According to Bengal officials, the arrangements and logistics were of the highest standard, and the athletes expressed great satisfaction with the event’s organization. This year’s championship marked a particularly proud moment for Bengal, as several first-time competitors, including Taranik Ghose and Hardik Das, contributed to the state's success.

Bengal’s team included standout performances from multiple swimmers across age categories. Senior boys like Jahangir Molla led the charge, winning three golds in the S12 category for 50m and 100m breaststroke and 100m butterfly. Other gold medalists included Ali Imam, who dominated freestyle events, and junior athletes such as Biswajit Jana and Annesha Das, who showcased their skills in freestyle and backstroke categories.

The event also highlighted the exceptional prowess of Bengal’s junior girls, with swimmers like Asmita Ghosh and Deepanwita Majumder clinching multiple golds and silvers in the S8 and S6 categories, respectively. In addition, Bengal swimmers collectively excelled in relay events, contributing to the substantial medal count that marked this championship as one of the team’s best performances to date.
