BCCI to rethink Ashwin’s role as India faces Australia test after crushing defeat
Xtra Time Web Desk: India endured a crushing 0-3 defeat in the Test series against New Zealand at home, marking the first time in their history they have lost a home Test series by this margin. The disappointing performances of senior players, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja, have sparked widespread criticism, with this series being one of India's poorest in recent memory.
While the spotlight has been on the underperformance of Rohit and Kohli, Ashwin has faced significant criticism from fans on social media for claiming only 9 wickets in the series. His struggles were particularly noted in two instances: when captain Rohit Sharma opted not to give him the ball while defending a mere 107 runs, and during the final Test in Mumbai, where Ashwin went wicketless on a turning track.

Following the series loss, reports suggest that the BCCI might engage in informal discussions regarding the future of the team's senior players, including Ashwin.
At 38 years old, Ashwin is nearing the twilight of his career. One of India's greatest spinners, his recent dip in form is concerning as India prepares for their biggest challenge of the year—the Test series against Australia away from home. India's chances of reaching the World Test Championship Final may depend on Ashwin rediscovering his form. If he struggles, India might turn to Washington Sundar, who performed impressively in the last two Tests against New Zealand and has shown his all-round ability in Australia.
However, many believe it might be premature to sideline Ashwin, a veteran of 105 Tests with 536 wickets. Ashwin was crucial in India’s last two Test series wins in Australia, where he picked up 18 wickets in four matches. His stellar performances in the 2020-21 series, including a memorable innings-saving knock in Sydney, were vital in India's historic series win.

Former cricketers, including Simon Doull, have weighed in, with Doull suggesting that India should focus on selecting their best five bowlers for the Australia series. The debate on whether to choose Ashwin or Sundar will persist, but as Doull pointed out, the Australians would likely prefer to face Sundar over Ashwin.
Former India coach Anil Kumble echoed Doull's sentiment, noting that Ashwin's quality and ability to trouble the Australians make him a strong candidate for selection.
For Ashwin, this series could serve as an added incentive, especially as he competes with Nathan Lyon for the most wickets in Test cricket. With the spotlight on him and his place in the team under scrutiny, Ashwin might just have the motivation needed to prove his critics wrong and deliver a standout performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
