Xtra Time Web Desk: India's disappointing loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last week has sparked discussions about stricter protocols for the national cricket team. Reports circulating on social media, including one from ESPNcricinfo, suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning significant changes to address discipline and focus during tours.

Key Protocol Changes

According to the report, the BCCI plans to limit the duration for which players can have their families accompany them on tours. For tours lasting 45 days or more, family members would only be allowed to stay for up to 14 days. Additionally, players will reportedly no longer be permitted to use independent transportation for commuting to practices and matches, ensuring stricter team adherence.

India's captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were reportedly briefed on these developments during a meeting with BCCI officials in Mumbai last Saturday.

Harsha Bhogle’s Reaction

Veteran cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle weighed in on the topic, sharing his views on X (formerly Twitter). Bhogle suggested a different area for reform, proposing a ban on personal PR agencies for team members.

"Reading of the changes the BCCI is apparently suggesting for the Indian team. I don't know how much to believe, but if I had to nominate one rule to be strictly applied, it would be to ban team members from having PR agencies," Bhogle posted.

Spotlight on Player Performances

The series defeat has drawn sharp criticism of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit struggled throughout the series, amassing just 31 runs in five innings at an average of 6.20. Kohli fared slightly better, managing 190 runs across nine innings at an average of 23.75, which included one century.

Head Coach Gambhir’s Future Uncertain

The BCCI is also reportedly assessing head coach Gautam Gambhir’s position. A final decision on his tenure will likely be made after the Champions Trophy scheduled for February-March.

The proposed changes signal the BCCI's intent to enforce greater discipline and accountability following the team's underwhelming performance in the marquee series.
