La Liga: Real Madrid steers to top of the table with 2-1 win over Real Sociedad

XtraTime Web Desk: Real Madrid steered to the top of the La Liga table with a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad at Estadio Reale Arena on Sunday. The win took Los Blancos to 65 points from 30 matches, same as Barcelona. Due to a superior head to head record Zinedine Zidane’s side are currently placed on top of the points table for the first time in La Liga this season.


Real Madrid took the lead in the 50th minute through a penalty strike from Sergio Ramos. The visitors were awarded a spot kick after Vinicius Jr was brought down by Diego Llorente inside the box. Benzema extended the lead for Real in the 70th minute. Mikel Merino reduced the margin for the hosts in the 84th minute. The talking point of the match though was a goal disallowed for the home team after Adnan Januzaj found the back of the net in the second half. But a VAR review showed Mikel Merino obstructing the view of Thibaut Courtois.


Other La Liga results on Sunday saw Valencia defeating Osasuna by a 2-0 margin while hosts Celta Vigo thrashed Alaves 6-0.
