XtraTime Web Desk: Real Madrid maintained its four points lead over Barcelona on top in La Liga with a solitary goal win over Athletic Bilbao at San Mames stadium on Sunday night. Sergio Ramos scored the only goal of the match from a penalty in the 73rd minute. In another La Liga fixture Barcelona were back to winning ways after drawing their least two matches. The Catalans thrashed Villareal 4-1 at El Madrigal. Real Madrid is now on 77 points from 34 matches while Barcelona is placed second with 73 points.
Sergio Ramos converted a penalty to give Real Madrid a hard earned win over Athletic. The visitors were awarded a penalty after VAR showed that Marcelo was fouled on the touchline. The Real Madrid captain made no mistake from the spot kick to take his goals tally to 10 this season. It was his fifth goal in seven matches for Los Blancos since the restart of the league in June.
In another fixture, Barcelona dominated the proceedings to register a 4-1 win over Villareal at Estadio de la Ceramica. Luis Suarez (20’), Antonio Griezmann (45’), Ansu Fati (86’) were on the score sheet for the Catalans while P Torres scored an own goal in the 3rd minute. Gerard Moreno reduced the margin for the home side. It was a much deserved win for Quique Setien’s side after drawing their last two encounters.
The visitors took an early lead when a Jordi Alba’s cross was turned into his own net by Pau Torres, under severe pressure from Griezmann. The hosts leveled the score within 10 minutes through Gerard Moreno
But unlike in their previous two games, where they twice let leads slip to draw, Barca looked back to their best and restored their lead in the 20th minute when Lionel Messi found Suarez on the edge of the area, and the Uruguyan was on target. Antonio Griezmann produced his brilliance in the dying minutes of the first half with a well time 20 yard lob to see Barca lead 3-1. Ansu Fati extended the lead for the Catalans in the 86th minute to see Barcelona return with a 4-1 win.
