Xtra Time Web Desk: Second half strikes from Angel Correa and Luis Suarez helped Atletico Madrid clinch the La Liga title after seven years. Diego Simeone’s boys came from behind to beat Real Valladolid 2-1at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla. Reigning champions Real Madrid were forced to settle for second spot in La Liga despite coming from behind to beat Villarreal.

Oscar Plano gave hosts the lead in the 18th minute. Atletico pressed for the equalizer and eventually was rewarded in the 57th minute with a strike from Angel Correa. Luis Suarez scored the winning goal for the visitors in the 67th minute. Atleti ended the season with 86 points from 38 matches, two points ahead of the Los Blancos.

The defending champions had to win their final match of the season and hope for a slip at the last by Atletico, but their rivals’ result meant what happened at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano was irrelevant in the context of the title race.

Victory for Los Blancos seemed unlikely for much of the contest, with Yeremi Pino giving the visitors the lead after 20 minutes, coolly flicking beyond Thibaut Courtois with the outside of his right boot, but Real did end their campaign with a flourish as Karim Benzema and Luka Modric struck late on for a 2-1 win.

Barcelona and Sevilla finished the league at third and fourth spots, respectively. Huesca, Valladolid and Eibar are the teams relegated.
