Jos Buttler seeks to draw inspiration from India’s superstar

XtraTime Web Desk: The Indian Premier League not only provided a much needed platform for local stars to rise and learn from senior cricketers and earn experience and eventually a chance into the Indian squad, but the tournament has also been a medium of exchange for international cricketers as well.

England’s wicket-keeper batsman Jos Butler has used the very same technique to learn from Indian skipper Virat Kohli and he is confident that the upcoming Test series will be a good place for him to make use of them. For Buttler, the series will also be a good platform to cement his place in the Test squad after earlier making a return in Pakistan series.

The wicketkeeper-batsman of England’s limited-overs edition had made a strong return to Test cricket in their 1-1 draw against Pakistan where he scored – 16, 67 and 80.

He was recalled based on his IPL 2018 form where he had notched up an array of fifty-plus knocks in Rajasthan Royals’ late revival in the competition. Selector Ed Smith believed that his dynamic form in IPL would help him in the Tests as well. Buttler was placed at number seven against Pakistan and he proved his worth with back-to-back fifties on home soil.

“The biggest thing I have learnt from the IPL is that it’s obvious what the best players do and why they are the best players and standouts,” said Buttler. “They just have a different mentality, a winning mentality in every game and the consistency to do that. I feel like I have learnt a hell of lot from watching guys train and go about their practice, ways they react to certain pressure moments in a game as well,” he added.

Buttler, who had made his Test debut against India four years back, then talked about Kohli and how his hunger to give the best every single day has inspired him to emulate the same.

“Someone like Virat Kohli is an immensely talented guy but also watching him go about it you see that mentality of getting to the top,” he explained. “They seem to make the right decision a lot of the time. That is a skill. The hunger to do it day in day out…that hunger really shines through in those top players.”
