Xtra Time Web Desk: Rajasthan Royals have retained captain Sanju Samson ahead of the IPL mega auction. Samson was the stand out performer for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021, scoring 484 runs in 14 matches at an average of 40.33. He registered one hundred and two fifties last season.

Samson is the first player to have been retained by the franchise. According to the rules laid down by BCCI each franchise can retain a maximum of four cricketers ahead of the mega auction. The franchises can retain a maximum three capped Indian players. Two of the retained names can be overseas players. Each franchise is likely to get a purse of Rs 90 crore in the upcoming IPL auction.

The two new franchises Lucknow and Ahmedabad, can pick three players before the auction after the retentions are over. The combination for these two teams would be two Indians and one overseas player.

Despite Samson performing well, Rajasthan Royals had a disappointing season failing to qualify for the play offs. The franchise finished seventh in the IPL points table.
