ISL 2021–22: Five key things to watch out for in the first Kolkata derby

Xtra Time Web Desk: The much-anticipated Kolkata derby between ATK Mohun Bagan and SC East Bengal in the ongoing Indian Super League 2021-22 season will be played at the Tilak Maidan in Goa on November 27. The Kolkata Derby is the most important match in any tournament for players of both SC East Bengal and ATK Mohun Bagan. Not only the players, even the fans from both sides soak in the tension and excitement ahead of the derby which is traditionally the oldest rivalry in football in Indian football. Antonio Habas’ side had a great start to the ISL 2021-22 season, winning 4-2 against Kerala Blasters in their opening encounter. SC East Bengal on the other hand were held to a 1-1 draw by Jamshedpur FC. Xtra Time takes a look at the five key points ahead of derby:

Roy Krishna-Hugo Boumous pair: The partnership between Roy Krishna and Hugo Boumous has already proved to be a hit for ATK Mohun Bagan. The duo will prove to be a nemesis for most teams in the competition this season. Both Boumous and Krishna will feel confident going into the derby having scored in the first match. Coach Antonio Habas will bank on these two players to come out with flying colours in the derby.

Arindam Bhattacharya in SCEB goal: The golden glove winner from last season Arindam Bhattacharya raised quite a few eye brows when he switched allegiance to SC East Bengal from ATK Mohun Bagan. He put up an outstanding performance in helping the Green and Maroon Brigade reach the final last season. Arindam, who has been entrusted with the added responsibility as SC East Bengal captain will look to replicate his performance from last season under the bar.

Manuel Diaz and Antonio Habas: It would be an interesting tactical duel between the two Spanish coaches. While SC East Bengal coach Manolo Diaz relies on possession-based football and unpredictability in attack, ATK Mohun Bagan’s Antonio Habas is mainly depends on set pieces and counter attacks. Habas is regarded as one of the best tacticians having won two ISL titles. Manolo Diaz will have to bring out some tricks under his sleeves to rattle the plan of his compatriot.

Roy Krishna factor: SC East Bengal will be wary of Roy Krishna because he has the ability to change the complexion of the match with his goal scoring ability. The Fijian striker scored in both the derbies last season. He ended up being the top scorer in ISL 2021 with 14 goals. SC East Bengal defenders will have to be on their toes marking the Bagan striker as he is dangerous around the box.

Tomislav Mrcela & Franjo Prce: It will be a huge challenge for SC East Bengal’s defensive duo Tomislav Mrcela and Franjo Prce, playing in their first ever derby. They will be up against the formidable ATK Mohun Bagan’s dangerous strike force headed by Roy Krishna, David Williams and Manvir Singh. They will also have to keep Hugo Boumous at bay. It is going to be a tough challenge for the two SC East Bengal defenders.
