Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Punjab Kings on Wednesday named Shikhar Dhawan as the captain for the IPL 2023 season. Dhawan will replace Mayank Agarwal as the new captain. Punjab Kings were forced into the change after Trevor Bayliss took over the reigns from Anil Kumble as the head coach. Brad Haddin also joined the coaching staff. The franchise has decided to go for a major overhaul.
Dhawan was roped in by Punjab Kings in the IPL 2022 mega auction for INR 8.25 crore. The left hander was one of the major contributors for the franchise as he amassed 460 runs in 14 matches at an average of 38.33.
As far as Mayank is concerned, he got the boot after failing to motivate the franchise to do well. The captaincy role didn’t suit Mayank as he only managed to score 196 runs in 13 matches at an average of 16.33.
Moreover, Punjab Kings finished at the sixth spot under his captaincy which influenced the management to make the changes in captaincy along with coaching staffs.
