INDvsENG 1st Test: England ride on Pope’s brilliant hundred to lead by 126 runs after Day 3

Xtra Time Web Desk: The first test between India and England is heading for a thrilling finish. At the conclusion of Day 3, England finds themselves at 316/6, boasting a lead of 126 runs with Ollie Pope (148) and Rehan Ahmed (16) at the crease. India, beginning the day at 421/7, was eventually dismissed for 426, securing a commendable lead of 190 runs.

England’s second innings displayed a marked improvement, with openers setting a solid foundation. Although Zak Crawley departed early, a 68-run partnership between Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope ensued. However, Jasprit Bumrah made critical breakthroughs, dismissing Duckett and trapping Joe Root lbw. Ravindra Jadeja cleaned up Jhonny Bairstow, and Ashwin claimed the pivotal wicket of Ben Stokes, his 12th against the English captain.

Ollie Pope’s resilient century in challenging conditions, supported by Ben Foakes in a crucial 112-run partnership, propelled England beyond India’s first innings total of 436 runs. Unfortunately, a stroke of luck for India occurred in the final session, as Axar Patel’s delivery kept low, dismantling Foakes’ stumps. Rehan Ahmed joined Pope, ensuring no further wickets fell on the day.

Earlier in the day, the hosts could only manage to add 15 runs to the overnight total of 421/7. Both not out batters Ravindra Jadeja(81*) and Axar Patel (35*) could not add much to their scores. Jadeja was leg before against Wise Athletic  

 With England’s lead at 126, the stage is set for an enthralling contest on the remaining two days, promising opportunities for both teams to seize victory.
