Internet Desk: Former India Captain Sourav Ganguly is all set to get a bilateral series named after him. Ganguly will be the third Indian cricketer whose name will be associated with a bilateral series. The forthcoming test series between India and Bangladesh is likely to be called Durjoy-Ganguly Trophy.

Earlier Sunil Gavaskar and MAK Pataudi’s names were associated with bilateral series between India-Australia and India-England respectively. The bilateral series between India and South Africa is called Mandela-Gandhi trophy.

Bangladesh is set to tour India for a one-off Test later this year, in August. This will also be Bangladesh’s maiden test on Indian soil. The one-off test match is likely to be staged at the Eden Gardens. There have been demands that the bilateral series be named after two retired captains from the two countries – Sourav Ganguly and Naimur Rahman Durjoy.

The reason for this naming would be quite poignant. Durjoy was Bangladesh’s first Test captain, after they had received Test status from the ICC in 2000.  He led the Tigers in their first ever Test at the Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka, against an Indian side led by Sourav Ganguly.

A lot of water has flown between the Ganges and Padma. Ganguly has now earned a reputation as a shrewd administrator, while Bangladesh has gone from strength to strength in world cricket.
