Kolkata: Mohun Bagan received a shocking defeat against FC Pune City in their IFA Shield match today in their second game of the competition. It was Gani Ahmed Nigam who scored the only goal of the game in the 75th minute. The win took the Pune outfit on the top of the points table with six points from their two games and in a great position to go through to the semi finals.

It was Mohun Bagan who dominated the entire game but failed to grab the chances they got in the game. The Bagan attackers missed as many as eight to nine golden opportunities in the game. In the 75th minute, Gani took a fine shot from the left which hit the woodwork and went in. The goal eventually became the decisive factor of the game as the Bagan forwards failed to equalize in the remaining part of the game.

Though the Bagan supporters and players became angry as they were denied from a penalty despite a clear hand ball by an FC Pune City defender inside the box. Mohun Bagan’s coach in the IFA Shield Jo Paul Anchery said, “It’s disappointing. If this is the standard of the referring, you must get frustrated. In the game of football, the referee is the boss. But here it seems the boss himself knows nothing about the game.” Though he added, “At the same time if you continue to miss these many chances in a game you don’t deserve to win a game.”

Gani Ahmed, who scored his second goal of the competition, said, “We got a lot of opportunities today and would have been happier if we would have scored more goals today.”

Though the referee had to deal with some serious agitation by the fans against the referee after the final whistle, for denying Mohun Bagan from the penalty and the police had to intervene to keep the things under control.

Now, the last match for the Mariners on 3rd June will become a “do or die” battle to stay alive in the competition.
