ICC Chairman: Former WICB president sees no chance if Sourav Ganguly decides to contest

XtraTime Web Desk: Former West Indies Cricket Board president Dave Cameron has admitted that he will stand no chance if BCCI President Sourav Ganguly decides to contest the elections for the post of ICC Chairman. The post of ICC Chairman is left vacant since Shashank Manohar has decided to vacate his office on July 1. Cameron is the only official to have made his plans public to run for the post of chairman of International Cricket Council (ICC). However, the Jamaican is unlikely to get the backing of his own board.

The ICC is expected to announce the guidelines for the elections which was supposed take place during the Annual General Meeting held Cape Town later this month. But with the global travel restrictions due to the pandemic, it has been postponed.

Two names which have been doing the rounds as front-runners are former ECB Chairman Colin Graves and current BCCI Chief Sourav Ganguly.
Talking about his chances against such heavyweight candidates, Cameron said, ‘‘Let me admit that I am no comparison to Ganguly. If ‘Dada’ eventually decides to announce his candidature, he will get Asia’s support and he has been an awesome character for the things he has done for the sport. However, if he is not in the running, then it will be a great opportunity for me.’’

In an interview to Gulf News, Cameron spoke highly of Manohar who was instrumental in removing the Big 3 model. According to the 49 year old administrator,‘‘I would like congratulate him (Manohar) as he followed an ideal during his tenure. If there was any difference in opinion in the board, he always wanted us to come around through discussion,’’ he said, before adding that it’s not possible to win a popularity contest if one is in a position of power.

As per the ICC norms, Cameron needs two nominations for his candidature to be valid and he is expected to approach his own board for its nomination. It is very unlikely he will get the support from WICB at this stage.
