I-League 2017-18: Mohun Bagan keeps their title hopes alive, snatches crucial win over Churchill

Kolkata: Mohun Bagan floats their outside chances of keeping them in the title race as the Mariners beat Churchill Brothers at Goa by 2-1.

It was a must win game for Mohin Bagan to stay alive in the race and the Green and Maroon brigade showed great characters to snatch a crucial away win.

The first interesting moment of the game came in the 35th minute when a Churchill goal was disallowed. Gurung’s long cross was headed by Monday bulged the back of the net. However, but it was disallowed as Francis claimed to have pushed Kingsley in the Bagan box and a foul was given.

Mohun Bagan took the lead in the second half in the 55th minute. It was set up by Dipanda who saw Kadam in space to exploit on the left side. The winger made his way in the box and unleashed a left-footer. Kithan got a touch but it was not enough as the ball nestled in the far corner.

Churchill Brothers equalized in the 74th minute to make it 1-1. Super-sub Pawan had just come in which allowed Monday to go up front and he scored.

Churchill’s celebration didnt last for too long as Mohun Bagan made it 2-1 immediately through Akram Moghrabi. Moghrabi scored from Faiaz’s cross. A clinical finish by the centre forward.

The win takes Mohun Bagan above East Bengal and to 30 points. Though the Mariners played one game more than their arch rivals.
