Xtra Time Web Desk: FIFA has launched an investigation into alleged racist chants by Argentina players following their Copa America victory. This action came after the French Football Federation (FFF) raised concerns about a video circulating on social media. A FIFA spokesperson stated, "FIFA is aware of a video circulating on social media and the incident is being looked into. FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone, including players, fans, and officials."
The controversial video, live-streamed by Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from the team bus, captured players singing chants condemned as "racist and discriminatory" by the FFF. The incident followed Argentina's 1-0 win over Colombia in the Copa America final in Miami on Sunday. Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, a teammate of Fernandez, described the video as showcasing "uninhibited racism." Fernandez later apologized on social media, expressing regret for his actions, stating, "The song included highly offensive language, and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I got caught up in the euphoria of our celebrations."

Chelsea Football Club released a statement condemning the incident: "Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behavior completely unacceptable. We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities, and identities feel welcome."
This incident has brought back memories of the racist abuse directed at France striker Kylian Mbappe and other players of African descent on the national team after their defeat to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final. Despite the uproar, neither the Argentina Football Association nor Lionel Messi have commented on the incident. Representatives for both parties did not immediately respond to requests for statements.
While Argentina's triumph over Colombia secured them a record 16th Copa America title, the aftermath of their victory has now been overshadowed by this investigation, as FIFA seeks to address the serious allegations of racism within the sport.
