Xtra Time Web Desk: In a gripping Euro 2024 last 16 clash, Slovenia valiantly held off Portugal, with Jan Oblak making a stunning save in extra time to deny Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty after Diogo Jota was fouled. However, Portugal triumphed 3-0 in a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out, thanks to Diogo Costa’s heroics, propelling them to a quarter-final showdown against France.

Portugal's coach Roberto Martinez switched back to a 4-3-3 system after a disappointing group stage finale against Georgia. The change paid off as Portugal controlled the game early on, creating their first chance when Bernardo Silva’s cross narrowly missed Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes at the far post.

Despite playing in their first-ever knockout match at a major competition, Slovenia held their defensive shape well, limiting Portugal's opportunities. Slovenia’s first significant effort came just before halftime, with Benjamin Sesko’s shot from the edge of the box comfortably saved by Costa. Portugal’s Joao Palhinha hit the post with the final kick of the half after another threatening run by Leao.

In the second half, Ronaldo’s venomous free-kick was parried by Oblak, and Sesko missed a golden opportunity for Slovenia, dragging his shot wide after outpacing the veteran Pepe. Ronaldo continued to test Slovenia's defense but couldn't break through, leading to extra time.

The first period of extra time was largely uneventful until the 103rd minute when Jota earned a penalty. Ronaldo's powerful shot was dramatically saved by Oblak, tipping it against the post. At halftime of extra time, Ronaldo was visibly emotional, with Portugal fans chanting his name to lift his spirits.

Slovenia had another golden chance when Pepe's mistake allowed Sesko to race through on goal, but Costa saved well with his leg. The match then headed to a historic penalty shoot-out for Slovenia.
