Xtra Time Web Desk: In a recent press conference, Didier Deschamps emphasized the importance of not rushing Kylian Mbappe back onto the pitch after the star forward suffered a broken nose. Deschamps made the decision to keep Mbappe on the bench during Friday’s 0-0 draw against the Netherlands, prioritizing the player’s long-term health over immediate match results. This cautious approach was taken despite the critical nature of the game, which saw France miss the opportunity to secure a spot in the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a match to spare.

"With each day he's getting better, and if it had been a decisive game this evening, I would have thought twice about him playing or not," Deschamps explained. "After what happened, I thought the wiser decision was to keep him on the bench."

Without Mbappe, France struggled to convert their chances, with Antoine Griezmann notably missing key opportunities. Despite dominating possession and creating multiple scoring chances, Les Bleus could only boast a solitary own goal from their two matches in Germany. However, they remain well-positioned to advance with four points from their first two games.

Deschamps made a tactical adjustment by bringing in Aurelien Tchouameni to replace Mbappe, opting for the security of an extra midfielder. Reflecting on the match, he expressed his frustration at the team’s lack of finishing efficiency. "I always try to take the right choice so we have the most balance in the team as possible," Deschamps noted. "The only regret I have is that we weren't efficient enough. We had five or six chances to score."

The match also featured a controversial moment when Xavi Simons' late goal for the Netherlands was disallowed after a lengthy VAR review. The goal was ruled out due to Denzel Dumfries interfering with French goalkeeper Mike Maignan from an offside position. While Dutch coach Ronald Koeman argued the goal should have stood, Deschamps disagreed, stating, "I was taken aback with how long it took because when I saw the screen it was a no-brainer."

Looking ahead, Deschamps is optimistic about Mbappe’s recovery and potential return for France’s final group stage match against Poland on Tuesday. With their sights set on progressing further in Euro 2024, France will aim to capitalize on their opportunities and secure a decisive victory.
