Kolkata: It has been 13 long years he has been associated with Kingfisher East Bengal club. But never had he thought that he had to hear “Go Back” from his own supporters during the match against Sporting Clube de Goa at Barasat on Friday. With a broken heart, East Bengal’s brand ambassador and technical manager Alvito D’ Cunha gives an exclusive interview to xtratime.in.
XT: You are neither the coach nor a player of East Bengal still you had to bear all the slangs from the supporters during the whole 90 minutes of the match. Why?
Alvito: I really do not know. This may be as I did not sign for Mohun Bagan because of my love and affection for East Bengal. This is the special gift gifted to me by the supporters at this period of time.
XT: Do you feel that any kind of provocation is working behind it?
Alvito: May be. But I cannot say anything without any proof.
XT: Why do you feel so that any kind of provocation is working?
Alvito: May be someone wants to grab the manager’s post removing me.
XT: It is heard that you are the one to remove coaches from East Bengal whether it may be Subrata Bhattacharya or Biswajit Bhattacharya. Is it true?
Alvito: Oh my God! I have so much power in East Bengal club. Even I did not know that. There are so many officials in our club to look on to those matters. Who am I to decide! Am I the Boss of East Bengal club!
XT: There are also allegations that you are the one who helped Dong to lose his focus. You used him as you wish. What is your say on that?
Alvito: If somebody requests me to take Dong as a guest in any function or puja pandal opening, I used to take him. But I never took any “cut money” from Dong. If you don’t believe me, you are free to ask Dong. Actually, when everything goes the wrong way, it is human nature to describe everything in a negative manner. This is Kolkata’s Football culture.
XT: Then, why are you pointed as the main culprit behind everything?
Alvito: As I had said earlier, I do not know at all. It may be because we could not achieve the I-league trophy for the last 13 years, the supporters’ grievances and anger are coming out altogether. I can understand their pain. But why am I marked as the culprit, I really do not know. If my mother comes to know all these allegations against me, she will surely commit suicide. For the last 13 years, I have been in Kolkata only for the love for East Bengal club and its supporters. At the end of the day, this is not the kind of respect which I should deserve.
XT: Why do you sign as a player for East Bengal but plays the role of technical manager?
Alvito: My aim is to win a big trophy for East Bengal and play the last ten minutes in that tournament and then retire.
XT: If you do not get that chance, then what will you do?
Alvito: Otherwise, I will retire as a club footballer for East Bengal like Bhaichung Bhutia. But I will never dream of playing for any other club other than East Bengal and retire.
XT: So what next? Will you stay in East Bengal or leave?
Alvito: If the officials ask me to leave, I will leave tomorrow. For the betterment of East Bengal I can do anything.
