Xtra Time Web Desk: A brace from Bruno Fernandes helped Portugal defeat Uruguay 2-0 in FIFA World Cup 2022 Group H fixture at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on Monday night. The win guarantees Portugal a spot in the last 16.

Portugal took the lead in the 54th minute through Bruno Fernandes. Uruguay almost equalised when substitute Maxi Gomez hit a post before Luis Suarez missed from close-range. Portugal doubled the lead in the injury time from a penalty taken by the Manchester United star. A VAR check saw Jose Maria Gimenez handling the ball inside the box. Fernandes made no mistake converting from the spot-kick.

There was an untoward incident as a protester invaded the pitch carrying a rainbow flag. He wore a t-shirt which read “Save Ukraine” and “Respect for Iranian women”.

Portugal are through to the last 16, along with France and Brazil, but still need a point to be declared Group H winners.

In another Group H fixture at the Education City Stadium, Ghana outplayed South Korea in a five goal thriller to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
