FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup 2022: Hosts India suffer embarrassing 0-8 defeat against USA in opener

Xtra Time Web Desk: It was a reality check for the India U17 girls as they suffered an embarrassing 0-8 defeat at the hands of USA in the opening encounter of FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup at the Kalinga stadium on Tuesday. USA were far more superior compared to their opponents and dominated the proceedings.

Melina Rebimbas scored a brace (9”, 31”) while Charlotte Kohler (15”), Onyeka Gamero (23”), Gisele Thompson (39”), Ella Emri (51”), Taylor Suarez (59”) and captain Mia Bhuta (62”) struck a goal each for the Concacaf champions.

The heavy defeat would see India U17 women’s team in a difficult position to qualify for the quarterfinals. Thomas Dennerby’s side has two matches left in the group stage — against Morocco (October 14) and title contender Brazil (October 17).

Brazil had notched up a 1-0 win over Morocco in a Group A match played here earlier in the day. The top two teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the quarterfinals.
