Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the first Indian footballer to captain a top European club.

Internet Desk: Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu created history on Sunday by becoming the first Indian footballer to lead a European club team. Gurpreet was chosen to do the honour for his club Norwegian Tippeligaen club Stabaek. He led the club’s reserve side to a 2-0 victory over FC Senja, keeping a clean sheet.

Gurpreet shared his views to xtratime.in on his moment of glory.

How does it feel to captain an European side as an Indian?

Well I am happy and feel honoured  that I was entrusted with such a role. I hope if I am called up for such an opportunity again I will try and give my best and lead the players in the right way if I can.

What is your next target?

Right now my aim is to work hard and cement my place in the first team. For that I need to train harder every day and show that I capable to play in the first eleven.

Why have you not decided to play in the ISL?

Anyone who knows football will agree that the standard of football played in Europe is much higher than the level of I League or ISL. If I get chance to play in abroad regularly then I don’t see myself returning back to India.

Is there any chance of seeing you again in the I-league?

I don’t really know. As I said if I keep on getting better opportunities and a chance to move on in Europe I will stay here. Frankly speaking, I would prefer to play in Europe as the standard here is much higher compared to I League and ISL.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper took to twitter in announcing his achievement. It was indeed a great boost for Gurpreet who aspire to make it big in his professional football career.
