EURO 2020: Netherlands make it to the last 16 following 2-0 win against Austria

Xtra Time Web Desk: Strikes in each half from Memphis Depay (11’penalty) and Denzel Dumfries (67′) helped Netherlands comprehensively outplay Austria in EURO Group C clash at the Johan Cryuff Arena on Thursday night. The win also guarantees Frank de Boer’s side a berth in the last 16 for the first time since 2008. The Dutch top Group C courtesy their two wins in two matches.

The hosts took an early lead from a penalty. Austrian captain David Alaba tripped Dumfries inside the box. The referee at first overlooked it but after the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) he signaled a spot kick for the Dutch. Memphis Depay made no mistake to score to put the home side in the lead in the 11th minute of the match.

It was Dumfries who doubled the lead for the Dutch midway through the second half with a simple close-range finish after the visitors’ offside trap failed. It was also the PSV Eindhoven right back’s second goal of the tournament.

As a result, Frank de Boer’s side have joined both Italy and Belgium in the knockout phase having won Group C with a match to spare.
