Xtra Time Web Desk: An own goal from Mats Hummels gave World champions France a winning start in EURO 2020 Group F clash against Germany at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night. It was not a perfect comeback for Hummels who was recalled after a two year hiatus from the national team. He deflected Lucas Hernandez’s cross into his own goal in the 20th minute.

It was the hosts who came closest to scoring when Serge Gnabry’s volley from a Robin Gosens cross narrowly went over the bar. Didier Deschamps’ side though could have extended their lead through Kylian Mbappe as his superb curling finish was disallowed because of off side. The visitors had another goal turned down, this time Benzema was the unlucky guy.

Ultimately, though, Hummels’ own goal proved sufficient for France, who dominated the proceedings. With the likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema and Antoine Griezmann, France can fancy going the distance in the tournament.

The win takes France to second spot in the points table as holders Portugal registered a 3-0 win in the first match of the Group of Death.

France will next meet Hungary at Budapest on Saturday.
