EURO 2020: Extra time penalty strike from Harry Kane see England through to the final

Xtra Time Web Desk: An extra time penalty strike from Harry Kane saw England beat Denmark 2-1 to march into the final of EURO 2020 at the Wembley stadium on Wednesday. The visitors took the lead in the 30th minute with a superb free-kick by Mikkel Damsgaard. England equalized after an own goal from Denmark captain Simon Kjaer in the 39th minute. Gareth Southgate’s boys will meet Italy in the final at the same venue on Sunday.

It was heartbreak for the Danes after putting up an inspirational fight in front of a packed Wembley stadium. Denmark took the lead in the 34th minute from a free-kick after Andreas Christensen was brought down by Luke Shaw. Mikkel Daamsgaard took an absolute stunning strike towards the near top-left corner to beat the outstretched hands of Jordan Pickford.

Down a goal, England kept piling the pressure for an equalizer. Kasper Schmeichel produced a brilliant save to deny Raheem Sterling from scoring. But seconds later the Manchester City man was behind the equalizing goal in the 39th minute. Harry Kane passes a superb ball for Bukayo Saka on the right and the latter cuts it back for Sterling before the Denmark captain does the job for him with his defensive block, putting it into his own net. Both sides had opportunities to score as the score line read 1-1 after the regulation time.

England was awarded a penalty after Raheem Sterling was brought down by Daniel Wass inside the box. Referee Danny Makkelie after checking with VAR signaled the spot kick. England captain Harry Kane scored from the rebound after Schemeichel failed to grab the ball diving towards his left.

The goal saw wild jubilation in the stands as for the first time the Three Lions made it to the final of European Championships. England will now take on Italy in the final at Wembley on Sunday.
