Durand Cup 2019: Gokulam upsets Mohun Bagan to lift the trophy for the first time

XtraTime Web Desk: After East Bengal now it’s Mohun Bagan, the giant killer Gokulam Kerala FC defeated green and maroons in the 2019 Durand Cup. The mariners started well with their signature passing movements but failed to break the deadlock. Meanwhile, Gokulam scored in the dying minutes of the first half as a brilliant counter attack awarded them a penalty. Former Mohun Bagan forward Henry Kisekka went passed the Bagan defence while Debjit Majumder had no clue. The Bagan keeper awarded the penalty as Marcus Joseph made no mistake to score his tenth goal of the tournament.

In the 52 nd minute Naocha Singh came up with a brilliant through pass to find his skipper. And Marcus took care of rest of the business. He calmly took the ball forward and tucked it in past Debjit’s near post. Mohun Bagan came back in the game when CK Ubaid made a terrible mistake! He fumbled and dropped the ball into the goal as Salva Chamorro head went straight at him. Joseba Beitia took the free-kick, which led to the goal. The Kolkata giant tried hard to equalise but Gokulam defence was very alert. The intensity was also missing in the Bagan attack the execution was the problem for Kibu Vickuna’s men. In the 87 th minute Gokulam down ten men as Jestin George was given the marching order. In the 93 rd minute Fran Gonzalez and VP Suhair went forward with lots of intent but the end product was not good enough. In the 96 th minute Francisco Gonzalez put in an amazing cross but his teammate and striker Salva Chamorro headed it over the bar. That was a great chance for Bagan. 

Kibu Vicuna and his men were screaming when Muhammad Irshad jumped in to block the cross but the ball hit his hand inside the six yards box but the referee gives nothing. Benched Fran Morante was given red card as he was not happy with the decision.
