Xtra Time Web Desk : Diego Maradona’s 1986 ‘Hand of God’ jersey was auctioned on Wednesday for a sum of $9.3 million USD, a record amount for a sports memorabilia, according to Sotheby’s.

The Blue Argentina jersey which the 1986 FIFA World Cup winning captain wore during the 2-1 victory against England in the quarter final stages was targeted by seven bidders in total, although the name of the buyer wasn’t disclosed by Sotheby’s.

“This historic shirt is a tangible reminder of an important moment not only in the history of sports, but in the history of the 20th century,” said Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectibles Brahm Wachter in a statement after the sale.

“This is arguably the most coveted football shirt to ever come to auction, and so it is fitting that it now holds the auction record for any object of its kind,” added the Sotheby’s head.

Maradona’s 1986 jersey has surely been one of the most coveted football shirts of all time as this was the one which was wore by Diego Maradona while he scored two most contrasting goals of the last century in, the ‘Hand of God’ goal and the ‘Goal of the 20th Century’.
