Xtra Time Web Desk: The newly unveiled Cristiano Ronaldo’s statue in Goa where football is a popular sports, has drawn mixed reactions from the locals. Many locals have condemned the erection of a statue of the Portugal footballer, as Goa was once colonised by the Portuguese. They feel it’s an dishonour to the state celebrating 60th anniversary of freedom from colonial rule.

Micky Fernandes, a former Indian international player who is from Goa, said the choice was “hurtful” and a “hangover” from Portuguese rule.

Local MLA Michael Lobo told that the motive behind erecting the statue was inspiring more and more youths to take up sports and excel in national and international platforms.

“All the boys and girls who want to make football a career will get inspired by people like Cristiano Ronaldo,” Lobo said.

“If you pursue your dream and you’re passionate about it then you can reach a higher goal. This is what we have written on the plaque.” added Lobo

However locals who bear the brunt of colonial invasion gave contradictory views.

“Very disappointed to hear of the statue of Ronaldo being erected. Learn to take pride in our own icons like Samir Naik and Bruno Coutinho”, a local Goan said.

During the inauguration ceremony many people held black flags to protest its establishment.

Some locals feel that it’s an insult to the state of Goa which celebrating 60 years of freedom from Portuguese rule, which happened 14 years after most India got independence from British rule.

“To erect a statue of a Portuguese footballer this year is sacrilegious. We condemn this”. Guru Shirodkar, right-wing activist told.
