COVID-19 Update: Bundesliga first to resume on May 16 following forced break; EPL & Serie A also sets deadline

XtraTime Web Desk: Bundesliga will the first among the top five European leagues to start resumption its league following the forced break due to coronavirus pandemic. Other top leagues like English Premier League, Spanish La Liga and Serie A are all preparing to restart as the situation is starting to improve. France has already declared its season over.

Bundesliga will start resumption from May 16 behind closed doors, despite the sobering events at Dynamo Dresden. Representatives of the Premier League clubs are due to meet on Monday to discuss the final details of the “Project Restart”, including the organisation of matches behind closed doors, on neutral ground and the extension of player contracts. It is learnt FA has already given its green signal to re-schedule the Premier League matches. The tentative start date of EPL is kept on June 08.

In Spain, fresh reports of coronavirus cases have delayed the plans to re-start the La Liga. On Sunday, La Liga said five players and three non-playing individuals had tested positive. The five players, who have not been named, will be quarantined at home and tested again “in the next few days”.
La Liga president Javier Tebas said he hopes the tournament can resume on June 12.

Italian Football Federation are planning to start the Serie A from June 13. Few clubs like Sampdoria and Fiorentina had resumed individual training this week. But according to a statement released by both clubs, few players have tested positive for coronavirus which means clubs will have to wait until May 18 at the earliest to start group training, and the sports minister warned on Wednesday that it was “impossible to set a definite date” for the resumption of matches.

Spanish La Liga will be back underway on June 20after being halted for more than three months due to the coronavirus lockdown. The matches will take place on Saturday, Sunday and on Wednesday, Thursday respectively.
