Internet Desk: Amidst speculation that India might boycott the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy, Committee of Administrators’ member Ramachandra Guha today said the country “absolutely must” compete in the event.
There is huge question mark over the participation of the Indian cricket team in the eight nation tournament which starts in June following the International Cricket Council’s new revenue and governance model. The Board of Control for Cricket in India was out-voted in the ICC over its opposition to a revamped revenue and governance structure.
The Board members are miffed with the massive cut in its earnings from the ICC revenues after the world body opted to end the ‘Big Three’ domination in its governance and revenue sharing.
Mr Guha, one of the key members of the Committee of Administrators has a completely different opinion altogether. The noted historian and columnist tweeted, “Boycotting or threatening to boycott a prestigious international tournament does not become a great cricketing nation.”
In another tweet that followed, Guha said, “Speaking in my personal capacity, as a cricket fan, I believe the Indian cricket team absolutely must take part in the Champions Trophy.”
The BCCI is expected to take a call on this matter in a Special General Meeting on May 7.
