Champions Trophy: India set to participate in the tournament, confirms BCCI acting president

Internet Desk: Roads have been cleared for India’s participitaion in the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy. After several rounds of deliberations the decks are being cleared between the BCCI and ICC, confirmed Mr. CK Khanna, the acting president of BCCI.

Confirming the news to xtratime.in, Mr. CK Khanna said, “Most of the members are of the opinion to send the team to Champions Trophy in England.”

He further confirmed that the BCCI secretary Anirudh Chaudhry will decide on the date of the selection committee. According to reports the squad for the Champions Trophy will be picked on Monday.

The decision was taken a day before the Special General Meeting of the BCCI which was scheduled to be held in the capital on Sunday. According to soources in the BCCI, the board members were in tremendous pressure from all corners to send the team to England. The situation was such that Team India Head Coach had to write to the BCCI conveying the players willingness to participate in the tournament. Former cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid too voiced their opinions in favour of sending the team to England.

The BCCI found itself in troubled waters after majority of the members were in favour of not boycotting the tournament. With the reamaining 7 teams already announcing their teams for the tournament before the deadline i.e., April 25, the Indian selectors will soon announce the squad on Monday.

India start their title defence against Pakistan at Edgbaston on June 04. The men in blue will feature in two warm up matches against New Zealand and Bangladesh on May 28 and May 30. This will be Virat Kohli’s first major ICC event as captain after MS Dhoni stepped down as the limited overs skipper in January.
