Champions League: RB Leipzig shock Atletico Madrid 2-1, sets up semi final clash with PSG

XtraTime Web Desk: A late strike (88’) from Tyler Adams dashed the hopes of Spanish giants Atletico Madrid as they lost 1-2 against RB Leipzig in the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Thursday night. Leipzig became the first German side outside Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to make it to the last four stages of Champions League since Schalke in 2010-11.

Atletico Madrid entered the contest as overwhelming favourites after getting past defending champions Liverpool in the previous round, but it was their opponents who made the more assured start in the Portuguese capital.

Leipzig took the lead soon after the start of second half. It was the result of a well worked 18 pass move with Spaniard Dani Olmo heading home from a Marcel Sabitizer cross. Diego Simeone’s side drew level as substitute Joao Felix converted from a penalty in the 71st minute after he was brought down inside the box. As the match headed for extra time, Leipzig scored the winner luckily as Tyler Adams shot got deflected and went in past a helpless Jan Oblak.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side will now face Paris Saint-Germain for a place in the final on Tuesday night.
