Xtra Time Web Desk: The fourth match of the Big Bash League between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers at Simonds Stadium in Geelong was marred by dangerous pitch conditions, leading to its abandonment after only 6.2 overs. The pitch had been affected by rainwater seeping under the covers overnight, leaving Renegades captain Nic Maddinson to describe it as "absolutely drenched." Despite efforts by ground staff, the decision was made to send the Perth Scorchers in to bat.

After 35 legal deliveries, with the score at 30-2, umpires inspected the pitch and deemed it unfit for play due to its unpredictable behaviour. A delivery from a length wide outside off-stump behaved unusually, spitting off the wicket and looping into the keeper's gloves, prompting concerns about player safety. The reaction from Renegades' keeper Quinton de Kock convinced the on field umpires that the pitch was not safe for the players.

Cricket Australia expressed disappointment and announced a thorough review of the circumstances leading to the abandonment. Umpire Ben Treloar explained that the last delivery behaved dangerously, leading to the decision to come off the field. Perth Scorchers' captain acknowledged the pitch concerns but emphasized the need to play on it before taking action. The consensus was that the right decision was made to prioritize player safety in the face of potentially hazardous playing conditions.
