Australia beat South Africa by 3 wickets to set up title clash with India | CWC2023

Xtra Time Web Desk: Pat Cummins led Australia is on the pursuit of a sixth World Cup title, after they defeated South Africa by 3 wickets in the second semi-final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Eden Gardens. The five-time former World Champions will now meet India in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19. Facing a target of 213 on a challenging, worn-out pitch, Australia managed to score 7/215 in response to South Africa’s 212.

South Africa, despite winning the toss and opting to bat first, found themselves struggling early on, collapsing to 4/24 in 11.5 overs due to the formidable bowling of Mitchell Starc (3/34) and Josh Hazlewood (2/12). In contrast, Travis Head played aggressively, contributing a rapid 62 runs in just 48 balls with nine fours and two sixes, while David Warner added 29 runs in 18 balls with four sixes.

The opening partnership of 60 runs in 6.1 overs between Head and Warner set the tone for Australia’s pursuit, aiming to stay ahead of the run rate on a challenging pitch. The conditions were such that South Africa opted for more overs of spin than pace in their bowling attack. Cummins, known for finishing crucial matches, once again played a pivotal role, securing the win and setting the stage for a high-stake final against India on Sunday.
