Asia Cup 2023: Injury concerns for Sri Lanka; Wanindu Hasaranga suffer hamstring injury during LPL

Xtra Time Web Desk: Reigning champions Sri Lanka is facing the prospect of missing out on the services of their star all-rounder, Wanindu Hasaranga, during the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 due to a hamstring injury. Hasaranga had been in superb form during the recently concluded Lankan Premier League (LPL) and was expected to be a vital asset for Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup.

The decision regarding Hasaranga’s participation is currently pending, as his name has been submitted to the Sports Ministry for approval. His availability will be contingent on him passing a fitness test.

Hasaranga’s performances in the LPL were exceptional, leading his team B-Love Kandy to victory in the tournament. He achieved a rare feat in T20 franchise leagues by topping both the batting and bowling charts, scoring 279 runs and taking 19 wickets. His remarkable figures of 6-9 against the Jaffna Kings in the Eliminator were the best in LPL history.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka is undoubtedly hoping for Hasaranga’s availability, especially in the latter stages of the Asia Cup. However, with the 2023 World Cup on the horizon, the Sri Lankan team faces a tough decision on whether to risk their star player in the Asia Cup.

Additionally, Sri Lanka will also miss fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, who is sidelined with a shoulder injury, further complicating their preparations for the Asia Cup.
