Xtra Time Web Desk: In a commanding display, Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured a dominant 3-1 victory over Machhindra FC in AFC Cup 2023 clash at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday. The home team’s triumph was punctuated by a stellar performance from Anwar Ali, who scored twice with powerful headers. Ali initially broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, capitalizing on a corner delivered by Hugo Boumous. His goal ended Mohun Bagan’s frustrating goalless streak in the first 39 minutes.

Australian World Cupper Jason Cummings also contributed to the team’s success by notching his first goal for Mariners in the 60th minute. He displayed his agility and finesse as he converted a counter-attack opportunity to extend Mohun Bagan’s lead. However, Machhindra FC managed to claw back into the contest when Missouke pulled a goal back in the 78th minute, injecting a momentary sense of tension.

Nonetheless, Anwar Ali secured his brace with another impressive header, triggering jubilation among the Mariners’ fans. The victory underscored Ali’s efficacy as a set-piece finisher and demonstrated his aerial prowess. The Machhindra captain and goalkeeper, Bishal Shrestha, made commendable efforts to thwart Mohun Bagan’s onslaught, denying key scoring chances.

Mohun Bagan’s coach, Juan Ferrando, fielded a formidable lineup, featuring prominent players from the Indian national team like Anirudh Thapa, Sahal Abdul Samad, and Ashique Kuruniyan. This strengthened lineup exhibited the team’s intent to make a strong start in their continental campaign. The win sets the stage for their upcoming encounter against Abahani Dhaka on August 22, where Mohun Bagan will aim to sustain their winning momentum on the same venue.
