After targeting Murali Vijay in Perth, Paine targeted Rohit Sharma in Melbourne as he challenged the Indian middle order batsman to hit Lyon for a six. During a crucial time of second day's play, Paine told Finch, who was standing close in: "It's a bit of a toss up between Royals and Indians for me. But if Rohit hits a six now, I'm changing to Mumbai." Rohit Sharma leads Mumbai Indians while Ajinkya Rahane, who was at the other end, led Rajasthan Royals in the 2018 season. While talking to the media after the day's play, Finch admitted Australia tried to distract Rohit but he did not fall for the bait. "We were just trying to have a bit of banter with Rohit. I asked Rohit if we brought mid on up if he'd take us on and go into IPL mode and he didn't take the bait, unfortunately. "It was just a bit of good fun, a bit of banter. It was a long time out there," Finch said.
